As a reader, I find the qualities you mention MUCH more interesting than romance. If romance is the sole focus of the story I'm likely never to open it. I think a novel is useless if it's not enjoyable or entertaining. Whether that entertainment comes from thrills, romance, humour or whatever isn't really important.
