How to move from a degree in Fashion Design to Journalism/Editorial?

I graduated last year with a degree in fashion design, with lots of relevant work experience, but it's not what I want to do anymore. I would love to move into broadcasting or journalism, working as an editorial assistant or writer would be ideal, but no one will give me a chance once they see my fashion design degree, they think I can only draw and sew! So how do I go about getting into this field, or even convincing a recruitment agency to take me on (so far they have ignored me completely) I understand doing unpaid work experience is the way forward, but as I have a flat and bills to pay it isn't really an option. Any advice?
